Helen’s story
Helen is a keen gardener and enjoys pilates, yoga, running and working out with her trainer. She’s based in Cardiff and works for Cardiff University.
She’s also an NCMH Research Champion, helping to spread the word about our research. This is her story:
I work in the School of Engineering helping researchers with engagement outside the University and the Research Excellence Framework (REF).
In hindsight, my first experience of mental health challenges was during my A-Levels when I experienced what I now know was depression. I’ve had periods of depression and anxiety ever since, particularly anxiety.
I learned about the National Centre for Mental Health in the Take Part in Research group on the University’s Yammer (like an intranet).
I wanted to volunteer as I don’t want others feeling the way I do when the anxiety is bad, and I want to be part of finding ways to help.
Everything was clearly explained, and the questionnaires well laid out and easy to understand so I wasn’t worried about being involved. It feels good that my experience is valued and can help others.
Everyone who can take part in this vital research should so we can develop a better understanding and management of mental health challenges.
