Professor Peter Huxley

Professor Peter Huxley has over 50 years’ experience in social work, social care and social psychiatry practice and research. He was the first Professor of Psychiatric Social work in the UK and the first social worker to be a Head of a Department of Psychiatry (at Manchester University where he worked for 30 years).
Before coming to Bangor he was the first Professor of Social Work at the Institute of Psychiatry in London. He has received multi-million pounds worth of research funding beginning in 1984, and has written 10 books and 200 peer-reviewed journal articles.
His longest standing research collaborations to date have been with Sir David Goldberg (‘Mental illness in the community: The Pathway to Psychiatric Care’1980) the late Dr Richard Warner in Boulder Colorado (‘Recovery from Schizophrenia in the 21st Century’ 2021) and Marcus Chiu and Kara Chan in Hong Kong (‘Social Inclusion: Theoretical Development and Cross-cultural measurements’ 2022; City University of Hong Kong Press).
