As today is World Mental Health Day, I wanted to take a little time to talk to you about mental health at work. More specifically, how my mental health problems have impacted on my work, and the strategies and support I have in place that enable me to work day-to-day and minimise the impact of the problems that my bipolar occasionally likes to throw at me!

On 10 October 2017, World Mental Health Day, I will give a talk at Cork City Central Library in the context of their lecture series 'History is to blame'. I did not ask specifically about the background to this series title but I assume they left it deliberately ambiguous – history is, perhaps, to blame for some of our current problems and conflicts, but also a very important source of knowledge to inform our present – including present attitudes to mental health.

When I’ve been asked to describe what it feels like to be bipolar, I’ve been at a loss for words. How can you describe something that can simultaneously feel like both the best and worst thing in the whole world?
